All you need is some time, a small amount of money; around a hundred pounds for a DIY’er to £600 to chill and let someone else sort it out. But it would help if you had the determination to make your side hustle work.
We’ll cover various eCommerce models, from DIY to hiring someone to do the job for you.
If you thought you had to travel the internet far and wide to source products from around the world, you are mistaken; this page has all the links you need to set up your business. I’m not going to beat around the bush; I’m giving you the best information about which company to choose based on what your personal budget is.
If I had a spare £500 lying about, I’d pay someone to do it. But that’s me, and then I’d sit back and relax and watch the money roll in without lifting a finger. When I started, I had nothing, well £20, and managed to do it for just under £16. Why not read about my cheap business start-up? The link will open in a new window.
First Things First For a Lucrative Side Hustle
Work out your budget; I’m going to be totally up front with you about how much you need to spend to get this eCommerce business of yours off the ground. Together with my chat and your determination, we can take you from thinking about it to actually doing it.
In fact, by the end of the post, you’ll think this is too easy; there must be a catch. Nope, no catch, I did it, and you can too.
There are thousands of others doing this and earning a lucrative side-hustle; in fact, plenty have gone from part-time to full-time because it is that easy to do as long as you put the effort in and have a good customer service mind. And seeing as you are a customer in many things, you know what you want, so you’ll know what service to offer.
If you’ve worked out how much money you have to invest in this business, we can begin.
Choosing Your Platform
Where are you going to sell? Most people say Amazon, but I say hold up, take a step back, let’s think about this some more. You want your own business, but you want to give it to another company? Well, it is possible you can sell on Amazon, but you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket.
It would help if you also had your own online presence. If something happens on Amazon, you might not get any sales, or they stop you selling for some reason; it happens. Or you don’t get paid, that happens too; you should read some of the reviews on Trustpilot about Amazon Seller, eyewatering and eye-opening.
So you need your own store, and there are several ways to get this, and it all depends on how skilled you are with WordPress; if you have no idea what I am talking about, scroll down to the Shopify section or Pay Someone, as you will be best off starting your business from there.
WordPress & Woocommerce
Hopefully, you will be familiar with WordPress because we want to use a plugin called Woocommerce, a store app. You install it and activate it. Follow the onscreen instructions, and et voila, you have a store. It is that easy.
However, before you think about this, you need to get a domain name and hosting, and I will recommend just one host as we want to crack on with this. Namecheap is the host, cheap domain names and cheap WordPress hosting; this is all you need. I could send you on a merry go round with the number of hosts out there, but I won’t. I don’t need to.
You want to get your business up and running, and to do this, Namecheap has everything you need. So off you pop, choose your domain name and buy hosting, then move onto section two, skip past Shopify. Also, the hosting you want is the second WordPress one called EasyWP Turbo, as you get a free SSL certificate with it.
An SSL certificate gives you the little padlock at the top of your browser; you can’t use Woocommerce without it or the Stripe payment system.
The easiest option for those who want to create their own online shop is using Shopify. In fact, you won’t need to read most of this article because Shopify also offers a payment system for you to use too. They have so many articles on there if you ever get stuck you are just one click away from an article.
[AF] I’m in the current process of building a shop there and I will be using a dropship supplier called Syncee. Seeing as we are talking about Syncee. This company is one of my suggestions for using as a dropshipper on Shopify along with Spocket. Just click their names to visit their website and research.
With Shopify, it will cost you £29.00 per month to host your store, and you need to buy a domain name on top of that, so for the first month, you need about £43 for your domain purchase for the year and your monthly hosting.
Some of the dropshipping apps will require payment, too, and you’re looking at £9 to £27 per month at the time of writing, some are higher and some offer a free service for a limited amount of products. This is fine if you want a very tiny side hustle. But, you want a business start-up so it is worth paying for more products. What you can list depends on the plan you purchase and you can do that on Spocket and Syncee. Oberlo is free but the delivery time is horrendous, so weigh up the pros and cons.
Selling on Other Platforms
Amazon is the first thought for most people, and you can sell dropship products here. But, you need to set up a sellers account. Don’t make the mistake I made and go for the professional seller account; otherwise, you’ll be charged. You want an individual seller account.
Now I can’t use Amazon as I don’t understand it. But you being cleverer than me will find it easyish to learn.
Be aware though you are at the whims and fancies of another company and they can allow you to use their platform or not. This is why you need a base shop for your side hustle, either Woocommerce or Shopify is best.
You can use eBay to sell dropshipping products, and at the moment, I am reconsidering using it. I faced the same problem with it being confusing for me, but I have a learning problem with new systems.
You are charged a small percentage fee for each listing, and you will be billed monthly, so the more you put on there, the bigger the bill plus, the more you use on there such as images, the more it will cost you.
Once again, you have to follow other peoples rules, so if you don’t mind this, you’ll be fine selling on this channel.
You can’t sell dropship products unless you are involved in the process. So you can sell [AF] t-shirts and hoodies where you have designed the graphics, but it is a no-no for normal dropship products. It is a good little side hustle.
You pay a monthly fee based on the items you list. You have the choice to add extras, but I haven’t tried those out yet. I have a store on there, but my t-shirt designs are crap, or it is not the best platform. Because I haven’t sold one yet, it may be the former.
There is a reason people pay someone, and it is normally because they have very little time to set an eCommerce store up. Or they do not have the technical know-how. I’ll point you in one direction only, and that is Fiverr; they have a whole crew of people waiting to create your dropship store, and the prices are very reasonable.
I use Fiverr for my marketing as I’m not too fond of link building and would prefer someone else to do all that. I know what I like, and it gives me time to focus on my writing.
You just let them know what you want, and they create for you. You pay Fiverr; they hold the money until the job is complete. And, if you are happy with the final product, you sign the project off, and your helper gets paid.
You can even pay people a monthly fee to run your side hustle, so choose a good one as you will be paying them out of your profits. They can even manage your eBay or Amazon store too.
My choice of dropshippers is based on the delivery times and the ease of connecting your store to the dropshipper. And, also connecting to one of the eCommerce platforms. I won’t waste time by gabbling on about them, I’ll list them and you can either click to go directly to them or press review and read more about them on Boosterooster.
Top Payment Services
If you are using Shopify you don’t need to worry about a payment service as Shopify will take care of that for you.
If you are using Woocommerce, you can connect PayPal or Stripe. These two are the best for accepting payment, in my opinion. You add the plugin to your site and follow the onscreen instruction on their settings page.
Now we enter the realms of online marketing, and companies spend a fortune on this as it is a specialised skill. But there are a few things you can do yourself to save some.
[AF] The first thing you need to do with a new side hustle is to make sure your site is optimised for the search engines, and you can install apps for this. I use Rank Math for this, and to speed up my site, I use a browser cache plugin.
There is more, but I’m not an expert; I just use apps recommended by WordPress. I used to be, but my memory no longer holds this information.
To be honest, I pay people to do my marketing as I find it stressful, I’d rather write than search.
I also use Semrush for my keyword research and recommend this to you as it takes all the hassle out of searching for them. Plus, if you are paying someone, you can give them the list, and they will add your keywords where they need to be.
I write my own social media posts, but I’m not really a social media person so I do find it very difficult. I haven’t as yet paid someone to post for me but I have considered it.
So you see, it is straightforward to create a start-up eCommerce business as your lucrative side hustle. Don’t let people tell you; you can’t because you can and for very little outlay.
I wish you all the best in your new business venture. If you go ahead with it let me know in the comments section, I’d love to hear from you.
